A keycord may be small, but it is indispensable on the pitch. Whether you are a referee, assistant referee, team manager, or coach: with a keycord, you can safely wear your whistle, badge, keys, or ID card around your neck — always within reach and never misplaced.

A keycord (also called a neck cord or lanyard) is a thin cord worn around the neck. At the end is a clip, ring, or holder to which you can attach an item. In football, keycords are most commonly used by referees for their whistle, and by officials for their accreditation or badge.

Keycords have several uses on the football field:

• Referee whistle — the most common use. The whistle is always ready for use, without the hassle of keeping it in a pocket
• Identification badge or accreditation — during official matches and tournaments, officials wear their pass visibly around the neck
• Keys or small accessories — useful for equipment managers or coaches during training sessions
• Whistles for coaches and trainers — a keycord is also a practical tool during training

Not every keycord is the same. These are the most important points to consider:

• Safety breakaway clasp — A keycord intended for sports use should ideally have a breakaway point or snap closure. In the event of a strong pull, the cord opens to reduce the risk of injury. This is especially important in contact sports
• Attachment clip — Check the type of clip: a metal carabiner holds a whistle more securely than a simple plastic ring. For badges and card holders, a lighter clip is usually sufficient
• Material and length — Most keycords are made from polyester or nylon, making them durable and washable. The standard length is approximately 45 cm (measured as cord length, excluding the clip), but longer versions are also available
• Color and appearance — Official referees wearing the KNVB collection usually prefer a keycord that matches their kit. Black is the most neutral and commonly used color
