Compression socks & compression sleeves — faster recovery, better performance

Compression socks and compression sleeves are worn by an increasing number of athletes — not only to improve performance during sports, but also for active recovery afterward. By applying targeted pressure to the calf muscles and lower leg, they support blood circulation and reduce muscle fatigue. At Voetbalshop you’ll find compression socks and sleeves from top brands, suitable for football, running, and other endurance sports.

What do compression socks do?

Compression socks apply graduated pressure to the lower leg, from the ankle toward the knee. This pressure — expressed in mmHg (millimeters of mercury) — stimulates the venous return of blood to the heart. For athletes, this means improved oxygen delivery to the muscles during exercise and faster removal of lactic acid afterward. The result is less muscle soreness, reduced swelling, and a shorter recovery time.

Compression sock or compression sleeve — what’s the difference?

The two products look similar, but differ clearly in use:

  • Compression sock — extends from the toes to just below the knee and also covers the foot. Suitable as a replacement for a regular sports sock, both during matches and training
  • Compression sleeve — covers only the lower leg (from ankle to knee), without the foot. Can be worn over a regular sports sock and is popular for post-match recovery or during long journeys

When do football players wear compression socks?

In football, compression socks are mainly used at three moments: during intensive training sessions to reduce calf strain, after matches to support recovery, and during long travel (such as away games) to help prevent leg swelling. Many professional footballers combine them with regular football socks on top so they comply with the clothing regulations of the KNVB.

Frequently asked questions about compression socks & compression sleeves

Do compression socks really help sports performance?

Scientific research shows that compression socks measurably improve blood circulation in the lower leg during and after sports activity. The direct effect on athletic performance is modest, but the recovery benefits — less muscle soreness and a faster return to training — have been confirmed in multiple studies. They are therefore most valuable as a recovery product after intensive sessions.

Which compression class do I need for sports?

For sports use, compression socks in class 1 (15–21 mmHg) or class 2 (23–32 mmHg) are generally recommended. Class 1 is suitable for daily wear and light recovery support; class 2 provides more pressure and is used for intensive training and recovery after demanding matches. Medical classes (3 and above) are intended for specific medical conditions and require consultation with a doctor.

Can you wear compression socks during a football match?

Yes, this is allowed, provided they are worn underneath the mandatory football socks and are not visibly protruding in a different color. Most players choose a thin compression sleeve or compression sock in a neutral color (black or white) that fits invisibly underneath the football sock.

How do I determine the correct size for compression socks?

The size of a compression sock is determined by your shoe size and the circumference of your calf. Measure the circumference at the widest point of your calf (normally 10–15 cm below the back of the knee). A sock that is too tight can restrict circulation, while one that is too loose will not provide enough compression. Consult the size chart of the brand you choose for the most accurate fit.
